Below is a list of the types of seminars offered, as well as the details and requirements of each. Please note that some of our seminars are offered in multiple parts and that you will have to sign up for each part separately to complete that certification.

This seminar is an introduction to the sport of competitive wake surfing, and its history, evolution and growth to the present.  Topics will include overview of the various organizations involved in competitive wake surfing worldwide, the role of the CWSA, the role of national organizations, the role of event organizers, live and other events, event formats, Rules including requirements to compete, equipment, divisions, the role of the judges, head judges, event results, protests, and the CWSA DIVE judging system, the CWSA World Rank System and the SafeSport program.  This seminar also includes detailed explanation of the DIVE system and how it is applied to judge competitors using judging exercises in discussion format with video examples.  This course is the perquisite for the Advanced Judge training, Module Head Judge training, and Live Event Head Judge training seminars.  Duration: six to seven hours.

Minimum number of attendees is required for this seminar. If the registrations do not meet the threshold minimum number of attendees, you may be rescheduled to a future date.

Refresher course: There have been significant changes to the rules since April 2019. If you previously completed this course, you may retake the course at a 50% discount.  Register for the course, and upon confirmation of the previous completion and completion of the current course, you will be refunded 50% of the registration fee.

This seminar is presented in two parts, each approximately three hours in duration. Parts may be taken in any order. Both parts must be completed for enhanced Judge rating.  Perquisite: Overview and Basic Judge Training completed after April 2019.

Minimum number of attendees is required for each part of this seminar. If the registrations do not meet the threshold minimum number of attendees, you may be rescheduled to a future date.

PART 1 – DIFFICULTY & VARIETY

This seminar part will focus on the application of the elements of the subjective criteria of Difficulty and Variety in a discussion format using video examples.  The course will also cover the five rank orders created by each Judge, scoring spread issues and the concept of relative values and ranking, review flags issues, relationship of the evaluation categories to each other, and theoretical assumptions underlying objective vs. subjective judgments and criteria.  Part 1 of 2, may take in any order. Both parts must be completed for enhanced Judge rating.  Perquisite: Overview and Basic Judge Training completed after April 2019.

PART 2 – INTENSITY & EXECUTION

This seminar part will focus on the application of the elements of the subjective criteria of Intensity and Execution in a discussion format using video examples.  The course will also cover the five rank orders created by each Judge, scoring spread issues and the concept of relative values and ranking, review flags issues, relationship of the evaluation categories to each other, and theoretical assumptions underlying objective vs. subjective judgments and criteria.  Part 2 of 2, may be taken in any order. Both parts must be completed for enhanced Judge rating.  Perquisite: Overview and Basic Judge Training completed after April 2019.

Topics include function, role, duties and responsibilities of the Module Head Judge, on course duties and authority (including the duties and authority of Judge 4 in hybrid event format), various issues considerations for module hosting including site selection, permitting and regulatory issues, module personnel requirements, roles of various module personnel, conflicts, module co-head judge, course layout, special considerations for various bodies of water, the module running order, camera placement and operation, technical requirements. Perquisite: Overview and Basic Judge Training completed after April 2019.

This Seminar is presented in three parts, each approximately three hours in duration. Parts may be taken in any order however sequential order is recommended. All parts must be completed for enhanced Judge rating.  Perquisite: Overview and Basic Judge Training completed after April 2019.

PART 1 – Pre-Application Planning, Application Approval Process

Topics will include live events and the role and relationships of the various players, including the CWSA, Event Organizer, Event sponsors and the Head Judge, venue selection, permitting and administrative entities and requirements, COVID issues, insurance, safety, contingency plans, event application and approval procedure, date conflicts, cancellations and postponements, event contracts, pre-event Head Judge duties and responsibilities.

PART 2 – Registration and Workbook Setup

Topics will include Event Organizer/Head Judge website access and features overview, adding additional staff or organizers to access, setting up and opening event registration, coordination with CWSA & National organizations, monitoring event registration, waitlist and waitlist issues, closing registration to waitlist, event format selection and considerations, workbook overview and running order creation, , event personnel including volunteers, judge team selection and other issues, Part 11 timing issues, timing requirements,  pre-event objections and procedures, workbook population for selected event format, document prep and printing, judge team packets and other pre-event issues.     

PART 3 – During and Post-Event

Topics will include rules overview and discussion related to Head Judge duties, responsibilities and authority regarding judge teams, scribes, boat and jet ski pilots, other volunteers, athletes, spectators, sponsors and others, Part 12 and post 2019 changes, SafeSport, scoring entry protocol and personnel, scoring review, review flag issues and resolutions, result posting timing, protests and procedure, issues, post event Head Judge obligations, scoring workbook upload, event result uploads, results and WRS review with CWSA, and event media upload.
